TEDTalks : The mathematics of war – Sean Gourley (2009)

from TEDTalks (video)

By pulling raw data from the news and plotting it onto a graph, Sean Gourley and his team have come up with a stunning conclusion about the nature of modern war — and perhaps a model for resolving conflicts.

Good source of statistical & multi-media information

Filed under: All Staff, Mathematics — Jacquie Henry @ 4:26 pm

I was working with a student today who needed charts/graphs on the issue of cloning. Basically opinion poll results.

We found some great material on one of the databases the library pays for. I know many (most) of you can’t get to the library page right now – but Christmas is coming folks!! We hope that Santa will be visiting your rooms and leaving behind actual functional computers in place of the abacus you have right now.

So – here is the direct link to this source. I hope you find it useful.

Opposing Viewpoints

Basically – if you are looking for statistics, you just type your topic in the search box. It will retrieve magazines, newspapers, books etc. Click the tab on the top that says “Statistics”. Depending on the topic – you might find some useful charts and graphs.

Another useful database to try is PowerSearch.

When using this source, click on the tab that says “multimedia”.  The things that come up here will be a mixture of pictures, audio files etc., as well as statistics.
